Listening to One's Community
Farmer John Peterson
Workshop Description:
"Who are you?"
Community is made up of individuals. The flourishing of a community is determined to a large degree by how people communicate, how they share with one another and listen to one another.
In Listening for One's Community, participants will be encouraged to share their dreams for their lives. Skills for powerful active listening will be taught, helping participants to bring their passions to life.
Farmer John Peterson designed and taught a 12 hr program for rural areas titled "The Art of Neighboring," in which people learned to support one another through listening and action (resulting in a lot of people baking pies for their neighbors, amongst other things.) Farmer John feels that conscious, attentive listening is one of the biggest gifts that we can offer to our communities.
Farmer John is the subject of the film "The Real Dirt on Farmer John" which will screen at the YIP Conference. The film models both prejudiced listening and generous listening on the part of John's community.
